The Port Women Navigating Excellence organization of the National Port Authority (NPA) marked the International Day of the Seafarer on June 25, joining the global commemoration of these unsung heroes. The event, held at the NPA headquarters on Bushrod Island, highlighted the paramount importance of seafarers to global trade and the Liberian economy, while also issuing an urgent call for safe and dignified working conditions.
Speaking on behalf of Honorable James R. Bernard, Deputy Managing Director for Operations, Miss Philomina F. Davis paid vibrant tribute to the men and women who, with courage and professionalism, brave the oceans. “We salute the men and women who confront the seas with courage and professionalism,” she declared.
This year’s central theme, “My Harassment-Free Ship,” resonated strongly. Miss Davis underscored the imperative of guaranteeing a respectful working environment, free from any form of harassment, for all maritime workers. She urged all stakeholders to adopt a zero-tolerance policy regarding harassment and to actively support seafarers through improved policies and strengthened training programs.
The celebration was also enriched by the contributions of renowned maritime experts. Deputy Commissioner John F. Harvey and Emmanuel M. Dolakeh, each in turn, emphasized the crucial importance of life at sea and the necessity of encouraging young people to embrace maritime careers. Their interventions highlighted the sector’s potential to offer significant opportunities for the new generation.
Instituted by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in 2010, the Day of the Seafarer is observed every June 25 worldwide. It honors the essential contributions of seafarers to international trade, economic prosperity, and safety at sea—efforts often underestimated by the public. This event at the NPA reaffirmed Liberia’s commitment to the well-being of its seafarers and its aspiration for a more equitable and safer maritime future.
